Both the accused are brothers and directors of M/s Sheetal Agro Inputs Pvt. Ltd. and Proprietor of M/s Mishita Enterprises located at Purohitpur in Jagatsinghpur district.
The Uttar Pradesh based company was operating its Regional Offices at different places of the country, including the one in Odisha at Lochapada in Berhampur.
The accused reportedly duped the businessman from Joda in Keonjhar district by posing a senior government/ RBI official. The accused was nabbed on March 15 and was produced before JMFC Barbil on Saturday.
During probe it was found that the accused has duped 13 more women whom he had met on various matrimonial sites and social media. Most of the victims, who hail from other parts of the country, are highly educated and hold key posts in various government and private sector organisations.
Senior police officials said that apart from duping several persons, the accused Smrutiranjan had also defrauded banks and a private finance company to avail loans for procuring several assets.
Earlier, the EOW had arrested two more persons-Suryamani Triapathy and Amit Kumar- in connection with the fraud. It was alleged that the accused had posed as IAS, PWD officers to cheat the unsuspecting victims.
