India's drug regulator, the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) had approved Covovax for restricted use in emergency situations in adults on December 28 last year and in the 12-17 age group with certain conditions on March 9.
The government has still not not taken a decision on vaccinating those aged below 15 years. The health ministry has consistently said that additional need for vaccination and inclusion of population for vaccination are examined constantly.
The Subject Expert Committee on COVID-19 of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation had on Friday recommended giving permission for conducting a phase-3 clinical trial of the single-dose COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik Light as a booster dose.
The Drugs Controller General Of India has already approved Covovax for restricted use in emergency situations in adults on December 28.
"This announcement is an important first step in vaccinating the world and halting the pandemic. Our vaccine technology offers a path to address an unfolding humanitarian crisis, namely the vulnerability the low- and middle-income countries face against the delta variant, Hotez said.
All the recommendations have been sent to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for final approval.
The Centre said that more than 30.54 crore vaccine doses have been provided to the states and Union Territories so far. According to the health ministry, 1,50,28,186 Covid doses are still available with the states and Union Territories to be administered.
