In a major breakthrough in the jewellery shop heist in Khordha district’s Jankia-Chhanagiri area, police arrested two more accused on Friday. With these arrests, the total number of people held in connection with the case has reached six.
According to police sources, the two newly arrested suspects hail from Cuttack and Puri’s Konark localities. During the operation, police also recovered 1.013 Kg of gold and 2.231 Kg of silver from their possession.
Earlier, four individuals had already been arrested in connection with the heist. So far, police have seized a total of around 2 Kg of gold and approximately 4.5 Kg of silver as part of the investigation.
The robbery took place around noon on August 24, when a group of eight masked men riding four motorbikes stormed into a local jewellery store in Jankia. Brandishing firearms, the robbers looted gold and silver ornaments in broad daylight before fleeing the scene.
Police have intensified their investigation to trace the remaining culprits and recover the remaining stolen valuables.
“In connection with the same case (Jankia-Chhanagiri jewellery shop heist), police have recovered around 1.013 Kg of gold and 2.231 Kg of silver from the possession of the arrested persons,” Khordha SP, Vivekanand Sharma, said in a presser.
“Six persons have been arrested so far, of whom one is a purchaser of the gold and silver ornaments. Today, two persons were arrested from Cuttack and Puri,” the SP added.
Worth mentioning, after conducting raids in Puri, Ganjam, Berhampur, Nayagarh, Cuttack, and Khordha, four persons were previously arrested in connection with the case.
Apart from a huge amount of recovery in terms of gold and silver, Rs 9.45 lakh in cash was recovered from them. A country-made gun, live ammunition, and sharp weapons were also seized from their possession.
