Bhubaneswar: Tension gripped Jatani area in Khurda district as scores of agitated people sit on dharna in front of the local electric office demanding compensation for the victims of electric shock on Saturday.

Demanding a compensation of Rs 10 lakh and employment to three family members, the agitators also sought the release of three persons arrested in connection with the incident.

In order to avoid any untoward incident, two platoons of police forces were deployed on the site and the DCP of Bhubaneswar Nitinjit Singh was also present on the spot.

However, after assurance for compensation from the administration, the agitation was called off.

On Friday night, five electricians including a line man identified as Sudarshan Martha and two junior engineers Nigam Ranjan Panda and Akshay Kumar Padhee were critically injured while repairing a 33 KV electric line. They were immediately rushed to a hospital in Bhubaneswar where lineman Martha succumbed to his injuries.

Raising questions over how the wire was charged while the linemen were at work, the family members of the deceased have demanded for a fair inquiry into the incident.
