Berhampur: Residents of Mandiapalli near here heaved a sigh of relief with forest officials claiming that the stray wild tuskers had been driven away from the area on Wednesday night. "The elephants have been driven away from the area, but we are not sure whether the animals moved towards their habitats," said Divisional Forest Officer, Berhampur AK Jena. The forest personnel are however, keeping a close watch."We have reserved the forest personnel to utilize the service," the DFO said.

The residents of Berhampur panicked when at least two tuskers strayed into the cashew jungle, outside the College of Fisheries, Mandiapalli, on the outskirt of the town on Wednesday. The pachyderms subsequently moved towards the cashew jungle nearby.

At least 20 forest personnel and several policemen were deployed in the area to prevent any possible man-animal conflict. "While there was no harm to the elephants, there was also no report of destruction caused by the jumbos," said a forest official.
