Rourkela: Lodosera, a tiny village with a population of about 1000 in Odisha's Sundargarh district, has undergone a real transformation after it was adopted as a Model Steel Village by Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).

The hilly village had a perennial problem pertaining to availability of water. Keeping this in view, RSP has sunk 5 tube wells and a deep bore well to provide access to safe drinking water and irrigation respectively, a senior RSP official said.

Availability of piped water has lessened the hardship of the women who had to earlier walk a long way to fetch a pail of water, to a great extent. Besides access to clean water has also ensured a better health for the villagers.

Construction of a Community Centre, about 2.51 kms of road, 3 culverts and other similar facilities have given a face-lift to the village. To promote education for children two classrooms and a boundary wall fencing had been provided in the village school. Many students of the village have been covered under various scholarship schemes of RSP, he said.

In order to provide income generation opportunities to the villagers 17 WADIs have been developed by motivating the farmers and providing them resources. 33 families have been involved in improved agricultural practices while 4 families have been benefited from 7 hectares of field bunding carried out on their agricultural land.

For landless or small landholders animal husbandry was promoted in a big scale. 109 improved & smokeless chullahs were also installed to safeguard environment and household health.

As a part of Project Kishori, the flagship initiative of RSP in the field of Women's Empowerment, a Self Help Group & Women Resource Centre were established. The girls who were trained in various income generation trades as well as health and hygiene at the Institute for Periphery Development (IPD) of RSP are now spreading the knowledge and skill acquired by them through practical demonstrations.

A Lok Vikas Sangathana with 5 members has also been established to look after various developmental initiatives.
