Bhubaneswar/Vishakapatnam: The 16-year-old gang-rape victim who was undergoing treatment at Care hospital in Vishakhapatnam succumbed to burn injuries on Tuesday.

“I was informed at 3:45pm that doctors at the Care hospital have declared her (victim) dead. We have sent an ambulance to bring her here and post-mortem will be conducted after that,” said Rayagada collector Sashibhusan Padhi over phone to OTV.

The teenage orphan was put on ventilator two days back after her condition worsened and she developed respiratory problem. Doctors treating her had then said that though the patient was able to recognise people, her condition was critical.

To avoid the social stigma, the victim, who hails from Anjipetta had attempted self-immolation on January 3, after she was allegedly gang-raped on the outskirts of Rayagada town the previous day. While returning home, she was forcibly taken away by four persons to a lonely place, where the crime was committed.

With 80 per cent burn injuries, the victim was first admitted to Rayagada hospital and then shifted to Care hospital in Vishakhapatnam on January 7 for further treatment as her condition deteriorated.

The girl was staying with her grandmother.

Police have so far arrested four accused in connection with the case based on the statement given by her.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressing deep condolence over the death of the minor declared ex-gratia compensation of Rs10 lakh to her family.
