Bhubaneswar: Taking up cudgels against Minister Pradeep Maharathy over his remarks on the Pipili gangrape and murder incident, members of the Odisha Mahila Congress today allegedly hurled tomatoes and eggs at the official residence of the minister.

Raising slogans against the minister and the State government, the Mahila Congress members displayed brooms in front of Maharathy's residence. A minor scuffle also ensued between the activists and the police present at the spot. Later, police took the agitators into preventive custody.

Eggs and tomatoes were found strewn in front of Maharathy's house who, as per sources, was not present at home when the agitation occurred.

The women activists alleged that a state hooliganism has been prevailing in the State. "Can the state government reply on the Pipili gang rape case? The government is only shedding crocodile tears for women... There is no respect for women. This time only tomatoes and eggs were hurled at his residence; for his anti-women remarks, the minister should be beaten up," said Shreeya Sambedana, a member of State Mahila Congress.

She further said that the Naveen Patnaik government is feeding 'goondas' and termed the ruling-BJD a 'rapist government'.

It is pertinent to mention that, on Monday, the Bhubaneswar Additional District Judge acquitted the prime accused of Pipili gang rape and murder case, Prashant Pradhan and his brother Sukant due to lack of evidence against them.

Maharathy, who had to quit from his ministerial post in 2012 based on allegations of shielding the accused, hailed the court’s verdict and said truth has finally prevailed.

Meanwhile, in his reaction, Additional Police Commissioner Sanjay Singh said, "Action will be taken as per law and cases will also be registered against those involved in egg-hurling incident."
