Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s trendsetting news channel Odisha Television Limited (OTV) organized its first convention ‘Foresight’ on Saturday here. The convention saw the congregation of distinguished speakers who deliberated on the pivotal issue of the perceived and real roles of the politicians concerning the society.

The convention not only threw light if the political leaders are serving the nation or destroying it, but raised the pertinent questions like — “Who is responsible for the current sorry state of affairs of Odisha? Is it the negligence of the Centre or the inefficiency of the state which contributes to the misery of its constituent?

The convention introspected at what the politicians are up to and what is expected of the politicians of the present era.  Rajiv Pratap Rudy, national spokesman, BJP said how the leaders of the country have failed in the all-round development of the country and how the democracy of the country means only to a select few.
 

Today, the politicians are entangled in scams. Whether it is multi-crore 2G spectrum allocation scam, Commonwealth Games scams, Adarsh Housing scam, irregularities in MGNREGA scheme or pulses scam and allocation of houses under Indira Awas Yojana in the state — there is an urgent need to address these issues and take the bulls by its horns, the orators emphasized.  

Sagarika Ghose, the Senior Editor, CNN IBN said how political system has reduced to dynasty politics and how they are always in a run to raise party funds. “It has been fashionable to blame the netas all the time which could be a dangerous notion,” Ghose said.   

Madhu Goud Yakshi, Congress MP of Andhra Pradesh said how the fourth estate of democracy compromised with its ethics especially after the expose of Nira Radia tapes. Yakshi emphasized how it is important for the people to exercise their franchisee while choosing their leaders.
   
Also present in the convention, senior journalist Aniruddha Behl picked some lines from his granny’s moral teachings. “We all cannot become Gandhi, only 5 per cent can,” Behl pointed out. 

BJD MP Tathagat Satpathy, the eminent political and media personality said, “We sincerely lack social leadership and the problem is that we are being over-dependent on politicians. Besides, every other field is lacking leadership.” 

The famed social activist Sarita Badapanda, Agriculture Minister Damador Rout, President of Utkal Bharat Kharabela Swain, and CPM leader Janardan Pati also put forth their views during the convention.

Bureaucrat turned politician Kharabela Swain is his speech alleged that the state is lacking good governance and the government has been a failure in the areas of education and health. He further added that the state is dependent on Central allocation.

Soumajit Patnaik, Chief Editor, OTV said, how our country has been plagued by never ending scams, yet it’s the people’s representatives who have governed us and given us direction. While Soumajit Patnaik deliberated in English, Manoranjan Mishra presented his views in Odia.

The grand convention specially designed to deliberate on the role of politicians was presided over by Jagi Mangat Panda, the Managing Director of OTV. Besides, Lok Sabha MP from Kendrapara Baijayant Panda, BJP leader Manmohan Samal and other dignitaries graced the occasion.
