Bhubaneswar: A minor girl was burnt alive and over one hundred persons of all age groups sustained burn injuries in separate incidents during Diwali in the state.

Eight-year-old Monalisa Behera was killed and about eight houses were gutted when a cracker fell on a thatched house and fire spread to adjoining structures at Repurpatna of Jagatsinghpur district on Wednesday night.

Three persons of a family were injured at Palada in Jajpur district when exlosives burst during cracker making on the dame day. The injured were hospitalised.

Several others suffered burn injuries in separate mishaps while celebrating the festival of lights in various places including Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Balasore, Puri and Berhampur, police said. In Sambalpur, about 30 fire cracker shops were gutted when fire broke out in one temporary structure.

About 40 persons went to the SCB Medical College and hospital alone at Cuttack for burn treatment. Six have been admitted to the hospital in critical condition.
