Kendrapara: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has come to the rescue of a dalit woman, who had been a victim of medical negligence in Orissa.

The NHRC sought a show-cause compliance report from surgeons who forgot to remove cotton material while carrying out a delivery in Kendrapara district headquarters hospital.

Taking cognizance of a petition in this regard, the rights body directed Orissa government agencies earlier this week for compliance of a show-cause reply within four weeks, official sources said.

T Duryodhana Reddy, a Berhampur-based human rights activist, had sought the NHRC?s intervention in the matter and had sought initiation of penal action against the errant doctors.

The patient, Minati Mallick (26) from Mahakalpada area had been admitted to the maternity ward of Kendrapara district headquarters hospital on April 21. When she complained of labour pain, she was shifted to operation theatre in the evening hours. She gave birth to a male child after a minor surgery. On medical advice, the mother and the new-born was discharged from hospital ward the next day.
