Bhubaneswar: The system of appointing private storage agents in force for the last 62 two years would be abolished and in its place a new storage agent policy would be implemented from Sunday to streamline the public distribution system in the state. The Food and Civil Supplies Minister Niranjan Pujari today said in the assembly that 2,497 number of new storage agents have already been appointed under the new policy.

The Minister further said that SMS system would be introduced in the future to further simplify the public distribution system in the state. The minister clarified that under the SMS system the proprietor of the retail outlet would inform at least 60 consumers regarding arrival of essential commodities supplied under the public distribution system. The minister Niranjan Pujari also said that Self Help Groups (SHGs) have been roped in throughout the state for distribution of items supplied under the public distribution system.
