Bhubaneswar: PL Punia, Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSCs) on his visit to the state expressed concern over the dismal conviction rate in cases registered under the SCs/STs (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

In a press conference organised on Friday here, Punia said that the low conviction rate has been very discouraging and efforts are needed to fasttrack the judicial process.

He also expressed his displeasure over the low turn out of students in primary and secondary schools. Besides, Punia sought report on the case registered against state Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout where the latter had allegedly uttered `Harijan` during a public meeting.

Alleviation of poverty from the state tops the Commission’s agenda and he would relentlessly work towards the upliftment of downtrodden, Punia asserted.
