Cuttack: Four persons died and 11 others were admitted to the SCB medical college and hospital here today after consuming country liquor on Monday evening in Barang-Mahidharpada area under the Cuttack Commissionerate police limits. While one person died in the SCB medical immediately after admission another three persons were brought dead, hospital sources said. The ten persons admitted to the hospital have developed complicacies in their eyes and doctors feared that some might become bliknd after cure. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem to ascertain whether the liquor contained any poisonous substance.

The victims and the critically affected persons had consumed the killer brew from the liquor shop owned by one Baidhar Bhoi. Baidhar ran the liquor shop at his own house at Tukuklipada under Kurang panchayat under Barang block. It was Baidhar who was first killed by the spurious liquor. The three others victims have been identified as Niranjan Bhoi from village Badajharilo, Ugrasen Bhoi from village Garagara and Bhaskar Dash. They were first admitted to the Mahidharpada hospital and then shifted to the SCB as their conditions became critical. Said Sangram Bhoi, relative of deceased Niranjan Bhoi,"The liquor was spurious for which the people died and others have been admitted in critical conditions."

Several villagers complained that Baidhar ran the illegal country liquor shop at his house at Tukulipada for the last six years. The Commissionerate police and the excise department swung into action immediately after the tragedy struck. The Cuttack DCP Praveen Kumar rushed to the village for an on the spot inquiry. The police seized several liquor bottles and ayurvedic items from the shop of Baidhar. The police detained the wife and son of Baidhar for investigations.
