Dhenkanal: In a shocking incident, four labourers were killed and three others injured critically in a fire mishap that occurred in the wee hours of Sunday at Labour colony Phase-II area of Bhusan Steel plant near Meramundali in Dhenkanal district.
 
The deceased belonging to Jharkhand was working as a contractual labour under L& T construction company.
 
According to reports, the injured were admitted to a private hospital in Cuttack as their condition was stated to be critical. Sources said, the fire had burnt at least 50 per cent of their body parts.
 
Although the exact reason behind the mishap is yet to be ascertained, eyewitnesses said short circuit occurred and took the inferno when the labourers were preparing food with a gas cylinder.
 

The labourers held the company authorities responsible for such mishap alleging it accommodated excess people in a small size room which led to death of three workers.

 
On the other hand, none of the company staff reached the spot till morning triggering tension among the fellow employees. However, the irate workers were pacified later after company officials held discussion with the victims’ family and district administration declaring Rs 9 lakh compensation to the kin of the victims. The plant authorities also assured one job to one of each victim's families.
 
In view of a possible tension, police forces have been deployed in the area. Police seized the bodies for postmortem and are investigating the matter.
 
“We received the information regarding the death of three workers in the morning. The investigation is on,” Bhusan police IIC Jitendra Kumar Sahu said.
