Puri: The state Endowment department has come under scanner after police claimed that the department was aware about the presence of silver bricks in the Emar mutt here.

After interrogation of the accused, police extracted details from them. The accused revealed that the officials of the Endowment department knew about the silver bricks present in the mutt since last July.

During a search at the mutt on July 31, 2010 and later on August 7, 8, 28 and 29, the officials came to know about the silver goods present in the mutt. However, the officials neither informed the police nor took any step to provide security to the valuables worth crores of rupees, police said.

“The Endowment officials were aware about presence of silver bricks in the mutt during their search on July 31 last year. The silver bricks went missing during the period from August 8 to 28,” Puri SP Sanjay Kumar.

When contacted, the Endowment Commissioner said he can not commit whether silver bricks were found at that time or not. He can only tell after verifying the records as he was not at the helm of affairs then.

“I assumed charge after September last year. I can throw light on details after verifying the records,” Endowment Commissioner Chakradhar Kar said.

It may be recalled that the Emar mutt issue came to light after the arrest of two persons in Dhenkanal who were disposing off stolen silver bricks. Further interrogation led to Emar mutt where 255 silver bricks weighing over 18 tonnes worth Rs. 90 crore were found stacked inside four wooden boxes.
