Educationists urge State govt to change school syllabus at regular intervals

Bhubaneswar: Expressing concerns over the unchanged syllabus for students under the Board of Secondary Education (BSE) since 2009, educationists have said that it may reduce the quality of education.

Educationists opine that due to the unchanged syllabus, students are unaware of the new developments in various fields. Similarly, the move has also forced the examiners to set up question papers in the same pattern which has lowered the quality of examination, educationists said.

"Students are forced to study the same topics for years.There would be no problem if the syllabus is changed in every 3 years and it would make it easier to set question papers," Ex-chairman of Board of Secondary Education (BSE) Satyakam Mishra said.

Educationist Prithish Acharya said, “Changing the syllabus is not a big deal but it is very important for the examination body to prepare themselves according to the reforms that keeps on coming.”

On the other hand, Chairman of Board of Secondary Education Jahanara Begum has refuted the claims that syllabus has not changed since 2009. She has said that syllabus for class 9^th was changed in 2012 while in 2013 changes were made for Class 10^th.

“Syllabus was changed for Class 9^th and 10^th in the year 2012 and 2013 respectively. We are incorporating some new topics in the syllabus of Class 10^th for the year 2020,” Begum said.

Despite no changes in the National Curriculum Framework after 2009, educationists have said that there will be no problem if BSE introduces reforms in subjects.

Earlier on August 30, the BSE informed that the examination pattern of matriculation examination will be changed and a new pattern will be implemented from 2020-21 session.
