Depression in Bay of Bengal on Aug 4, Odisha will record heavy rainfall during Aug 5-8

Bhubaneswar: Rain parched Odisha, which is stuck with the tag of deficient rainfall this monsoon by recording 26 per cent less rain as on Sunday, looks all set to host depression induced heavy rainfall during August 5 -8. The predictions are the whole State will receive heavy precipitation amounting to 4-7cm during the days.

As per IMD's weather inference today, a cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood, which extends upto 7.6km above mean sea level having a tilt of southwestwards with height, and under its influence a low pressure area is likely to form during next 2-3 days - means by July 31.

However, a study of wind models of ocean observer organisations under the Ministry of Earth Sciences like INCOIS reveals that the developing low pressure system will not be a weaker one, and it has a high probability of turning into the first Monsoon depression in the month of August.

As the winds in the cyclonic circulations are predicted at a high of over 36 knots, a stronger system of depression has been predicted in the northern Bay of Bengal (BoB), close to West Bengal. Since Monsoon depressions take a track of west-northwest direction to the south of monsoon trough, the track of the likely depression in BoB will induce heavy rainfall over Odisha during the period of August 5 - 8.

Private met forecaster Skymet has predicted a rainfall in the range above 70 mm in Kandhamal and Boudh region on August 8. Except Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, etc, all other districts in the State are predicted to record 5-7 cm rainfall on August 8, says a Skymet forecast.

Meanwhile, the State as on Sunday has recorded a precipitation of 391.4mm during the period of June 1 - July 28. Since the normal precipitation for the period has been estimated at 526.6mm, Odisha remained in the deficient rainfall bracket with 26 per cent less rain. As many as 12 districts are still in the deficient bracket. Gajapati and Balasore still have the highest deficient rainfall in the State. The deficient condition has not seen much improvement in western and central Odisha. However, the aforesaid districts and region will be witnessing depression -induced rainfall during August 5 - 8.
