Bargarh/Bhubaneswar: The Bargarh police today achieved a major success in anti-naxal operations when it arrested top Maoist leader Dhiren Mahato alias Girish along with one of his trusted allies. The Bargarh superintendent of police Kavita Jalan said that the district police foiled the master plan of Girish to blow off Bargarh, Atabira and Ambabona police stations against whom several cases were pending in Sambalpur and Bargarh districts.

Police said that Dhiren Mahato alias Girish was in charge of CPI(Maoist) organisation for Sambalpur, Bargarh, Deogarh and Sundergarh districts. He was second in command of the organisation after Sabyasachi panda and an important member of the CPI(Maoist) state committee. The Bargarh police today arrested Girish along with his accomplice Sankar from Can Road locality. "The police has impounded one revolver, live bullets, composes and maps of Bargarh police station and the district magazine centre including Rs 2900 in cash from Girish. Police also said that Girish used several aliases like Maharu and Uttam,"said Kavita Jalan, SP, Bargarh.

Girish hailed from Giridh district of Bihar. According to the police, Girish was arrested by the Ranchi police in 2007 but escaped from Chainbasa jail in January last year. Girish used to operate from the Saranda forests. Girish came to Sambalpur for the forest time in 2005. Twenty two cases of murder, loot and naxal related cases were pending against Girish in Sambalpur district alone.Said Upendra Nath Behera, special secretary, home department,"Several other cases were pending against Girish in Bargarh district as well."

Another top Maoist leader Budduram alias Santosh was killed in a police encounter in Rayagada on Saturday while Azad had surrendered before the police in 2011. The Bargarh police had last year arrested another important leader of the organisation Mangu Biswal. The arrest of Girish was said to be a big blow to the CPI(Maoist) organisation.
