Kendrapara: On a day when a super cyclonic storm 'Amphan' was unleashing a trail of destruction in the coastal belts of Odisha, a woman delivered a baby girl inside a fire services vehicle in Kendrapara district while being rushed to the hospital.

Deputy Fire Officer PK Dash said that the woman - Janaki Sethi (20) of Hatin village in Mahakalpara area experienced labour pain this morning following which her family contacted the ambulance. However, they could not avail the services as roads were completely blocked by trees uprooted in the cyclone.
Getting information, two fire services team with men and equipment rushed to the spot. "Braving strong winds and torrential rain, they cleared around 22 fallen trees on the road with the help of power saws," Dash said.
Seeing the woman in severe pain, the fire services team immediately decided to shift her to nearby Mahakalpada CHC. However, on the way to the hospital, the lady gave birth to a girl inside the fire service vehicle. "The team assisted the woman in delivery and then both the mother and her newborn baby were taken to CHC Mahakalapada for further treatment," added Dash.
Hailing the efforts of the OFS personnel, Dash said, "The team picked up a hazardous operation by risking their own lives to reach the woman in pain. Their timely and dedicated effort has saved two precious lives."
Meanwhile, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Jena informed that around 1,48,486 people have so far been evacuated from low-lying and coastal areas and moved to 2921 cyclone shelters. This apart, 1885 pregnant women from vulnerable areas have been shifted to hospitals in the past couple of days.
