Bhubaneswar: Malaysian budget airline AirAsia today informed that direct flights between Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar and Bangkok will be suspended.

Even as the AirAsia is yet to make a formal announcement regarding the cancellation of flight services which might possibly a temporary affair, they have informed the BPIA authorities that the move is likely to come into effect from September 25.

The new development comes just days after the BPIA authorities informed that the flight services will be curtailed at the airport in two phases starting November this year in view of re-carpeting work of the runway.

However, the airport authorities have clarified that there is no connection between the two developments.

It may be noted that Bhubaneswar-Bangkok AirAsia flights used to fly three times in a week- Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The flight service between the two cities was rolled out on December 6, 2018.

With the decision likely to cause concerns for flyers who have already booked tickets in advance, some officials of the AirAsia said on condition of anonymity that alternative arrangements of flights will be made for such passengers.

Meanwhile, terming the development as seasonal cancellation of flights by the company for the winter session, the BPIA authorities are hopeful that the operations will resume after that.
