Rayagada: At least three Maoists have been gunned down by security personnel at Kurumdunguri forest under Doraguda police limits in Rayagada district late last night, police said.

According to sources, acting on a tip off the Special Operations Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) jawans launched a combing operation following which an exchange of fire ensued between the security personnel and the Reds.

The gun battle continued for over an hour in which three Maoists were killed by the security personnel, added sources. Police are expecting more casualties in the incident.

Combing operation has been intensified in the area following the encounter.

On July 16, a security personnel was injured during an exchange of fire with Maoists inside the Tekguda jungles under Kalimela police station in Malkangiri district.

The incident occurred while the personnel of SOG and DVF were continuing an anti-Maoist operation inside the jungle.
