Cuttack: At least 22 students including six girls were injured when a low-intensity bomb exploded inside a class room of Ayatpur high school near Kandarpur in Cuttack district on Monday, police said.

While 12 critically injured students have been rushed to SCB medical college and hospital in Cuttack, the others are undergoing treatment in Kandarpur hospital.

According to some students, the bomb exploded at around 11 am inside Class- IX when the teacher was taking a roll call.

“A bomb like object exploded under the desk and we got horrified,” said a student.

“The bomb was suspected to be in the bag of a boy hailing from a nearby village. Some students have sustained injuries in the lower parts of their bodies,” Namita Mohanty, the headmistress of the school, quoting the students said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Pravin Kumar said, "We have sealed the school and a forensic team is examining the spot to find out what kind of explosive was used."

Kumar said the police hoped to get some clue about the incident after injured students recovered.

He did not rule out the possibility of a criminal angle behind the incident.

Sources said a departmental enquiry has also been initiated.
