Mayurbhanj: An elephant calf was rescued by the forest department officials on Saturday after it reportedly fell into a dilapidated well in Bisusola village under Deuli forest range in the district.

The baby elephant was part of a herd of 20 elephants that strayed into the locality accidentally and fell into the narrow and abandoned well and could not come out.

On being informed, Deuli forest range officials rushed to the spot and rescued the elephant after hours of hardship as the well was very narrow.

“The jumbos had strayed into the area when the baby elephant fell into the narrow well. We engaged a earthmover to rescue the elephant,” said a forest official

“It is not known exactly when the elephant fell into the well, though it was discovered there on Saturday morning,” he added.
