Bhubaneswar: As a part of its reformation process to enhance the quality of education and discipline in colleges, the Odisha Higher Education Department is bringing stricter attendance guidelines for lecturers.

In a seminar organised in Bhubaneswar over enhancement of quality of education in government and government-aided colleges, Higher Education Minister Arun Sahoo informed that lecturers will now have to get the leave grants approved from principals.

"College principals need to be more aware about their responsibilities. There is a need to work collectively towards bringing discipline in the system," said Sahoo.

Besides, he stressed the importance of quality education and said that a sense of responsibility and discipline has been seen among all after the education department came under the ambit of Odisha government's 5T-Governance model.

"We were thoroughly made to understand the responsibilities and how to ensure 75 per cent attendance of students and teachers in colleges," said Bandita Das, lecturer, Indira Gandhi Women's College.

Lecturer at Bishnu Samantaray College, Nuahat, Pabitra Mahalla said, "Only the presence of teachers in colleges can't ensure quality education. Besides, principals need to take the responsibility of regular checking of bio-metric records. However, most of the government colleges lack permanent principals."
