Bhubaneswar: Savithri Amavasya also known as Savitri Vrat is an important fast (vrat) observed by married women in Orissa. Fasting on the very day is considered highly auspicious in the Hindu month of Jyestha as it is believed that it prolongs the longevity of her better half.
The vrat is observed by all married women for the wellbeing of their husbands. Women performing the puja observe fasting through the day. They either read out or listen to Savirti Vrata Katha to imbibe in them the exemplary virtues and devotion of Maha Sati Savitri who saved her husband from the clutches of Yam.

For today’s puja, married women carry bangles, sindoor and bindis along with different types of fruits and flowers to the temple.

As part of innate tradition, Devadasis also perform this vrat dedicating it to Lord Jagannath presiding at the 12th century famous shrine in Puri.

Sashimani — the famed devadasi of Puri temple despite struggling with old age still performs the rituals of the vrat with great devotion. She prepares for this auspicious day traditionally decorating her and offers deepest love and devotion to Lord Jagannath.
The vrat was not only observed in the households and temple premises but also observed in the prisons where the women inmates observed it with gaiety and fervour.
