Cuttack: An elephant was wounded after being hit by a moving train on Gurudijhatia level crossing near Khuntuni in Cuttack district on Thursday evening.

According to reports, a herd of elephants was crossing the railway tracks near the level crossing while the train rammed into it, leaving one jumbo injured.

Meanwhile, the injured jumbo ran away into the forest just after the mishap and untraced since then.

As per the last reports came in, the forest officials have a launched a search operation to trace the pachyderm.

“We had informed the train driver about the elephant herd on the track and it’s his responsibility to slow down the train which was coming at around 50-60 kmph”, said Ratnakar Das , ranger of Khuntini range.

The mishap occurred due to the negligence of train driver, Das claimed.
