Cuttack: Traders in the city incurred heavy losses yesterday as Malgodam, the State’s biggest wholesale commodities market, remained closed due to the 12-hour bandh observed by Congress in protest against lapses in Nabakalebar rituals.
The impact of bandh was total as all the shops at Malgodam and Chhatrabazar, the State’s largest vegetable and fruit market, remained closed throughout the day.
On a single day, business transactions worth over Rs 35 crore take place at Malgodown while Rs 3 crore worth of fruits and vegetables are sold at Chhatrabazar.
According to Cuttack Chamber of Commerce, business to the tune of Rs 50 crore transacted by over 3,000 traders at the two commercial centres was affected due to the bandh.
As these business centres were closed, most of the daily workers were left with no work in hand during the day, the report added.
