Jeypore: In a barbaric incident, an eye of a minor tribal boy of Koraput district was allegedly gouged out while he was engaged in digging of a borewell work in Hyderabad as a migrant labourer.
However, labour officials, quoting a complaint lodged by villagers in this regard, say the left eye of the boy had to be extracted by doctors since it had been completely damaged after being hit by a stone.
“As per the complaint, a stone hit an eye of the victim during the digging of a bore well in Hyderabad. He was admitted to a local hospital for treatment where doctors had to extract the damaged eye since it had been completely damaged. I have sent the District Labour Officer and Labour Inspector to the village today for investigation after which the details of the incident would be known,” said Deputy Labour Commissioner (DLC), Jeypore, Sunil Kumar Sahu.
Two officers had been sent to Kenduguda village for inquiry, the DLC said adding they would talk to the boy and his family members and find out the truth. "The truth will be ascertained after the officers submit their inquiry report," he added.
Talking about the next step of the Labour department, Sahu said the department will write a letter to the contractor, who had taken the victim for work, and initiate action against him as per law.
“Apart from this, we will also ask the victim to file a compensation suit with the Labour Commissioner against the company which had engaged the victim in the work,” he added.
Reports said the victim, Arjun Durua, a minor tribal boy of Kenduguda village, had gone to Hyderabad with Puna Santa, a broker of Mundaput village of Koraput district, in October this year, to work as a migrant labourer. After reaching Hyderabad, he was engaged in the digging of a bore well.
Baliram Durua, father of Arjun, received a call from an unknown person on Kartik Purnima day on November 25 informing him that the eye of his son had lost his eye.
Family members, who did not believe the incident initially, found the information to be true after Arjun returned to his village on December 12.
