Nuapada: A farmer of Kerameli village under Kodameri panchayat ended life by hanging himself on Saturday allegedly due to crop failure and debt burden.

The deceased has been identified as Sahadeb Majhi (45).

Family members said Majhi was a sharecropper and had cultivated paddy in 2.5 acres this year for which he had borrowed a loan of Rs 32,000 from a cooperative bank. However, due to scanty rainfall, Majhi suffered crop loss.

He was mentally disturbed in past few days due to poor crops and his failure to repay loan forced him to take the extreme step, alleged the family members.

Meanwhile, activists of local Congress and BJP blocked roads near Haripur square demanding Rs 10 lakh compensation to the family of the deceased.

After getting the information, administrative officials reached the spot and pacified the agitating locals.

Sadar Tehsildar said Rs 5,000 has been given to the family members of Majhi from the Red Cross fund. Later, necessary assistance will be provided to the kin of the deceased as per the government programmes, he added.
