Rourkela: Apprehending threat to lives from ultras, four ex-Maoists today surrendered before police at Bonai in Odisha's Sundargarh district.

The four, including two from neighboring Jharkhand, Johan Munda, Joseph Jarkot, Johan Purti, and Sunita Munda were allegedly involved in Maoist violence in the district.

"They got disillusioned with the organization and decided to leave it. But they became apprehensive about their safety. With our effort, they surrendered," said Bonai Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) R Panigrahi.

Johan Munda was allegedly involved in the blasting of the Gram Panchayat office and godown at Rehlhati, and school buildings at Sanbalijore and Jharbeda while Jarkot and Purti were involved in the blasting of the CITU office and police outpost at Kalta in past.

Sunita was a member of the cultural troupe and also preached Maoist ideology, he said adding Johan had deserted the camps in 2011 while Jarkot, Purti, and Sunita did so in 2013.

They were working as daily workers to earn their livelihood but fearing attempts on their lives they gave themselves up, Panigrahy said.
