Bhubaneswar: BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi on Saturday urged the State Government not to bulldoze and demolish heritage structures in the periphery of monuments during beautification drives across the State.
"Many heritage structures have been demolished during the recently carried out heritage corridor development work. Conservation of heritage and development should go together within rules," said Sarangi on the sidelines of a heritage walk.

The walk was organised by voluntary organisation 'Samartha' to create awareness among people about the safety and security of heritage monuments like temples and maths across the State.
"Bhubaneswar is known as the 'Temple City'. We all are proud of our magnificent temples, ancient maths and other historical monuments in Odisha. People of the State along with the Great Sankaracharya have expressed their agony over the damages to many heritage structures during the recent beautification drive," said Sarangi.
"Development of these heritage places are required. But we can't afford to undertake developmental activities by demolishing other invaluable heritage structures lying underneath the prohibited zone," she added.
Earlier this month, Sarangi had written to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik urging him to come clean on the issue and explain the rationale behind destroying heritage structures on the pretext of conservation.
The BJP parliamentarian had expressed her anguish over what she termed 'reckless vandalisation of invaluable monuments' and asked the CM for a clarification on people responsible for the carnage of the heritage sites in the city. She had also sought to know the heritage conservationist who advised the State government on the beautification plan.
