Keonjhar: It is often said that behind every successful man there is a woman. A man in Odisha’s Keonjhar district showed ingenious engineering skills to bring a smile on the face of his wife who was facing difficulties in fetching water from a pond, some half-a-kilometer away from the village.

Laxmi Munda of Baneikela village under Jhumpura panchayat of the district has built a ‘desi hand pump’ using pipes used for electric wiring, wooden logs and some clamps. Munda who has only studied up to Plus-II, came up with the modified version of the tubewell only to ensure that his wife does not face problems in getting water.

“I was worried as my wife was facing problems in fetching water. I was trying hard and finally came up with this unique idea to provide water at her doorstep,” said Munda. The cost effective tubewell is not only catering to the drinking water requirements of Munda and his family but to other 20 families in the locality.

“I was facing a lot of difficulties to go to the pond to fetch water during odd hours at night. I am happy that my husband has resolved the issue,” said Sita, Munda’s wife.

Munda knows that the tube well can provide water till there is enough water in the nearby government pond. However, Munda’s efforts have been lauded by the villagers.
