Cuttack: Jaundice seems to have spread its fangs fast and wide in the city. The number of affected persons, which was 89 till a day before, shot up to 104 on Thursday after the city registered 15 more fresh cases of the water-borne disease.

Though the authorities have geared up and launched emergency measures to check the spread of the disease, the locals have alleged that the steps are not sufficient to fight against the deadly disease as the drains in areas like Nayak Sahi, Thoria Sahi and Bania Sahi are yet to be cleaned.

The alarming situation has forced the authorities to step up preventive measures across the city.

"We are taking preventive steps to arrest jaundice, which has spread in the city due to water contamination. Health workers and doctors have been engaged to take blood samples and provide medicines in the affected areas," said public health director Kailash Dash.

He said a state-level team led by the joint secretary has been pressed to take stock of the situation Thursday.

Besides, activists from voluntary organisations and staff of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) are distributing leaflets with information about the disease and Halogen tablets to localities in the city.

Maximum jaundice cases are reported in Jobra, Nayak Sahi, Thoria Sahi, Badhei Sahi, Machhua Bazar and Gamhandia areas, sources said.
