Balasore: The North Eastern Electricity Supply Company (NESCO) has collected a whopping Rs 6.5 crore pending electricity bills from defaulting consumers in two days in the second phase of arrear collection-cum-power disconnection drive.

The power distribution company has begun the second phase of the drive under its jurisdiction on March 11 with an aim to collect Rs 250 crores arrears by the end of this month.

General Manager of NESCO, Sudarshan Sahoo said, “We had initiated the first phase of bill collection from the defaulters and disconnection drive on February 16 which continued till February 29. In the first phase, we were able to collect Rs 17.5 crores and had disconnected electricity connection of those who failed to clear the pending bills."

"Now, we have begun the second phase from March 11 and have engaged around 223 squads for the drive. Within two days of beginning the second phase, we have collected Rs 6.5 crores,” he added.

Sahoo appealed to all consumers to clear their dues.

As per reports, NESCO in the first phase had collected Rs 17.5 crores from consumers in Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Jajpur districts. Besides, the electricity connections of over 10, 000 consumers in the districts were disconnected for failing to clear the pending bills.

Following several public outrages and considering the matric examination, the utility companies had decided to carry out the disconnection drive in three phases.

Earlier in February, the Southern Electricity Supply Company (SOUTHCO) had started power disconnection drive in their respective jurisdictions following the footsteps of Central Electricity Supply Utility (CESU).
