Bhubaneswar: After much hue and cry, the Central Electricity Supply Utility (CESU) today finally began the mass drive of disconnecting power supply to defaulting consumers across various areas under its jurisdiction.
As per a CESU’s release, around 13411 commercial consumers were covered by 533 Special Disconnection Squads of which power supply of 1545 consumers were disconnected.
While CESU collected Rs 5.38 crore during the drive, a total of 2346 consumers reportedly availed instalment facilities for making their arrears payment.
On the first day of its disconnection drive, the power utility company also focussed on arrear collection and receipt of consumer grievances. Moreover, CESU’s collection counters remained open throughout the day today to facilitate payment of arrears.
During the drive, five members of a squad and their vehicle were detained by locals of Gurujanga village in Khurda while they were trying to disconnect electricity supply of a betel shop owner who has been charged of defaulting on power bill of around Rs 21,000.
Worth mentioning, the Odisha government drew severe criticisms from the BJP and the Congress for launching the disconnection drive ahead of examinations.
Earlier, both the opposition parties had alleged that the Odisha government is targeting poor consumers while big industries are sitting on outstanding bills to the tune of crores.
