Modi slams Cong for Assam violence

Bhubaneswar: Slamming Congress for the Assam violence which has claimed at least 77 lives, senior BJP leader and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi today demanded immediate steps to de-franchise illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in that state.

“What happened in Assam is a matter of concern. The presence of a large number of Bangladeshi infiltrators has created tension among local tribals,” Modi told reporters during a visit here.

The violence took place at a time when Congress was in power both at the Centre and the state.

The violence that took place in Mumbai yesterday during a protest against the Assam riots was also a matter of serious concern, he said.

In view of the prevailing scenario, the Centre should make immediate efforts to restore peace in Assam. Immediate steps should also be taken to de-franchise illegal Bandhadeshi immigrants and push them out in order to restore normalcy, he said.

To a query, the senior BJP leader said in comparison to Congress-ruled states, other provinces governed by non-Congress political parties have been doing well and performing better.

Modi, however, declined to comment on the performance of the BJD government in Odisha.
