Bhubaneswar: The Maoists on Thursday blew up Niliguda panchayat office in Malkangiri on Thursday.

According to police sources, around 30-40 suspected Red rebels blew up the panchayat office during the wee hours on Thursday.

However, there was no immediate report of any casualty.

The ceiling of the two-storied building caved in and the structure suffered extensive damage in the blast, he said adding the same building had come under attack by ultras during construction last year.

In the earlier attack on Sunday night, a group of rebels physically assaulted Penta Majhi, son of a village head at Kurab under Kalimela police station area and burnt him to death, a police official said today.

Earlier in October last year, the ultras had damaged a godown meant to store food materials to be distributed under Public Distribution System (PDS) which was located adjacent to the panchayat office building at Niliguda village.
