Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik flagged off four traffic interceptors and 35 motorcycles, meant for Senior Citizens Security Cells, at headquarters of the Commissionerate Police today.

Patnaik also handed over one smartphone and bike to each police officer appointed as Nodal and Assistant Nodal officer at each senior citizens cell to deal with crimes related to the elderly people. Police can receive information and complaints of senior citizens over phone.

While the four interceptors will be provided to Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Berhampur and Sambalpur cells of police, the Commissionerate Police also plans to launch a senior citizens app soon, where elderly people can register online, Police Commissioner YB Khurania said.

The Senior Citizens Security Cells had started operation at only five police stations - Capital, Nayapalli, Kharavelanagar, Chandrasekhapur and Shahid Nagar – of Bhubaneswar Urban Police District  in 2009. Now the cells operate at all police stations under Commissionerate Police.

"The new initiative taken by the police commissionerate will certainly enhance its capability to serve people in a better way," CM Naveen Patnaik said.
