New Delhi: BJD members of Lok Sabha on Monday created ruckus over the Ordinance for the Polavaram irrigation project, the first protest in the 16th Lok Sabha.

BJD members, led by Bhartruhari Mahtab, were on their feet as soon as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Santosh Gangwar tabled the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2014, which was promulgated last month.

The members of the regional party from Odisha carried placards opposing the project, saying it will hurt the interests of tribals in the state despite LS Speaker Sumitra Mahajan was asking them not to shout slogans in the House.

"Please go to your seats. This is not fair. This is not the time. When ordinance will come up for discussion, you can raise the issue...you know the procedure...that time I will allow full discussion, but not in this way," Mahajan told the agitating members.

In the din, BJD leader Mahtab sought to raise a point of order but nothing was audible.

The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) members also joined the BJD members in the protest during the tabling of the Ordinance.

The Speaker adjourned the House for the day after laying of papers, including the President's address to the joint sitting of Parliament.

"We strongly oppose the Polavarm project and regarding this we protested against the Ordinance in the LS. The party expects the Central government to listen to the voices of thousands of tribals against the irrigation project and halt the progress of it immediately," said Kalikesh Narayan Singhdeo, BJD MP here.
