Bhubaneswar: In a major attempt to boost security arrangements, prevent crimes, maintain law and order and control traffic in the State capital, the Commissionerate Police has started installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the city.

Inaugurating the work of installing the surveillance system at the Commissionerate office here today, chief minister Naveen Patnaik said it will go a long way in ensuring the safety of the citizens in view of the intelligence inputs of possible terror attacks in the State.

According to sources, as many as 25 CCTV cameras have been installed at vantage points of the city in the first phase and more 65 CCTV cameras will be introduced in next two phases.

Meanwhile, monitoring screens have been installed at the offices of the commissioner, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) and Traffic DCP. The footage collected from the cameras will be received at these places for analysis, sources added.

Speaking on the occasion, police commissioner Rajendra Prasad Sharma said, “The CCTV surveillance system will help police control crime and conduct investigations. It will also help the cops improving their response to crisis situations. Besides, it will help enhance traffic regulation mechanism in the capital city.”
