Khurda: In a dramatic twist to the alleged murder of a college girl student in Ganga Nagar area under Balugaon police limits, police on Sunday claimed that a youth of her village earlier accused to be behind her death is not the real culprit but the sister-in-law of the girl has actually murdered her.

Police cracked the case today with the arrest of Kaberi Behera, the sister-in-law of the deceased girl.

Addressing a presser, Khurda SP Ajay Pratap Swain said that the accused committed the crime as an act of revenge following a quarrel with the college-going girl. Kaberi slit the throat of the girl with a knife on Saturday. Later, she made up a story and blamed a youth from neighbouring area for murdering the girl over love affair.

Balugaon police had registered a case following the complaint of the deceased’s mother and launched a probe into the matter. The police had also detained the youth for interrogation and later released him.

“We had detained some suspects in connection with the case. Following interrogation and based on the circumstantial evidence we learnt that there was lone assailant in the murder and she is Kaberi Behera, sister-in-law of the deceased girl,” SP said.

“The accused has confessed to the crime. We have recovered the murder weapon and a blood stained saree of the accused,” the SP added.

Notably, the 17-year-old Plus II student was found with her throat slit in their house while she was alone with her sister-in-law. She was first rushed to Balugaon community health centre and later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur where she succumbed to her injury while undergoing treatment.
