Safe Motherhood is one such issue, which has been ignored for a long time but this issue has been affecting the lives of many people across the country. Today on April 11, the State and the world observe Safe Motherhood Day.
According to reports, in Orissa every 303 out of one lakh women die from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth; whereas 63 out of every 1000 newborns die.
“The prime cause behind the death of mother and the newborn is due to negligence on the behalf of mother, family, society and govt. in taking necessary precautions. We cannot fight this problem unless they take up this issue seriously,” O & G Specialist Dr. Seba Mohapatra said.
There are various organizations in the State that are working for this cause, one such organization which began its work from Washington is White Ribbon Alliance.
This organization has worked in almost all the districts in the State to ensure that pregnancy and childbirth are safe for all women and newborns in the State. “We are working for this cause in Orissa from 2003. There are various other social organizations, individuals and professional bodies who are with us. We are aiming to reduce infant mortality and maternal deaths,” White Ribbon Alliance, State Coordinator, Sudhanshu Mohan Dash said.
