Bhubaneswar: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Odisha Police’s Crime Branch on Saturday arrested three persons, including two State Bank of India (SBI) employees, on charges of disbursing loans on basis of fake documents and causing a loss of more than Rs 67 lakh to the nationalized bank.

The arrested persons are Purandar Kabi, deputy manager at the bank’s lead Bhubaneswar branch, Manindra Mohan Kar, chief manager at its lead Nabarangpur branch, and Surendra Kumar Dhal, a retired employee who was the manager of SBI’s Malgodam branch in Cuttack during the scam period.

The trio sanctioned loans to 39 beneficiaries in the name an orphanage and special school in Nuapada in Cuttack and on the basis of fake documents in 2006. The bank’s Vigilance wing conducted a probe into the matter suspecting a scam when the loans were not repaid by the due date.

In 2011, the case was handed over to the Crime Branch. Notably, 17 out of 39 loanees have got anticipatory bails.
