The All India DanceSport Federation (AIDSF) has stepped up preparations to send a competitive team for the Paris Olympics 2024 which will witness break dance as a medal event for the first time.

Speaking to OTV, AIDSF general secretary Biswajit Mohanty said that the governing body, responsible for the development of the sport, is working tirelessly towards organising workshops, selection events and even hiring international coaches to train a select few in the build-up to Paris 2024. The governing body is trying to involve more players from Odisha, he said.

“We will promote the event through social media and hold various workshops in the chosen states and select dancers for breaking across the country,” Mohanty said.

The International Olympic Committee is organising the urban events with a view to lure younger audience to the medal events program at the 2024 Paris Games. It will be the first DanceSport event to feature at the Olympic Game, having been staged at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires two years ago.

The International Olympics Committee (IOC) executive board has also announced that skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing will also feature in the Paris edition after their debuts were postponed at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

Breakdancing will be called ‘Breaking’ at the Olympics, as it was in the 1970s by hip-hop pioneers in the United States.
While its inclusion in the Olympic programme has raised a few eyebrows among the sporting purists, the B-boys and B-girls in India believe that Breaking is a perfect mixture of art and athleticism.
