Former India cricketer turned politician Gautam Gambhir has urged BJP chief Jagat Prakash Nadda to relieve him of his political duties as he begins his tenure as the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of IPL 2024.

In a tweet from his official X account (earlier known as Twitter), Gambhir has requested the BJP president to relieve him off his duties so that he can focus on his cricket commitments.

“I have requested Hon’ble Party President @JPNadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM @narendramodiji and Hon’ble HM @AmitShah ji for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Jai Hind!,” Gambhir wrote on X.

Gambhir has made the important decision ahead of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and just days ahead of his return with KKR as their new mentor. The former KKR captain will be working closely with head coach of the team Chandrakant Pandit.

Notably, Gambhir led KKR from 2011-17. Under his leadership, KKP emerged IPL champions in 2012 and 2014. The announcement about Gambhir’s return to KKR as a mentor was made official on November 21, 2023.

The former India opener also worked as the mentor for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) during the 2022 and 23 seasons.
