London: As a tribute to Princess Diana, Prince William and Kate Middleton plan to leave for Buckingham Palace after their wedding in Westminster Abbey next month by riding the fairytale carriage used by Prince Charles and the late Princess of Wales after their wedding in 1981.

According to Royal Household officials, the Prince and Kate will use the 1902 State Landau on their way to Buckingham Palace, after their marriage on April 29, just as his parents did when they left St Paul`s Cathedral on their big day, the `Daily Express` reported.

And, the 28-year-old second-in-line to the British throne and 29-year-old Kate`s horse-drawn carriage will be led by a squadron from the Household Cavalry and another will be behind, they said.

However, if the weather is miserable, the couple will travel in the Glass Coach, which both Diana and Sarah Ferguson used to go from Clarence House to their wedding ceremonies as it has a permanent roof, the officials said.

In a break with tradition, Kate will travel to the Abbey in a car -- the Rolls Royce Phantom VI in which Charles and Camilla were attacked by student protesters in December.

The luxury car, given to the Queen as a Silver Jubilee present by the car manufacturer in 1977, is now being repaired after demonstrators splattered it with white paint and cracked a rear window in protest against student tuition fee rises.

William, Kate, senior members of the Royal Family and Kate`s parents Michael and Carole Middleton will travel in eight state cars to the Abbey. Prince Harry, William`s best man, and Pippa Middleton, Kate`s maid of honour, will follow in two separate Ascot landau carriages.

The Queen and Prince Philip will ride in a semi-state landau, as will Charles, Camilla and Mr and Mrs Middleton.
