Rourkela: In a major operation against illegal mining, Rourkela police arrested one person and remanded him to judicial custody, police said today.

Ganesh Prasad Jaiswal, described as a "big fish" in the illegal mining mafia gang in Sundargarh district, had been on police radar and was eluding arrest for the last four months, they said.

He was arrested yesterday and about 12,500 tonnes of iron ore worth about Rs six crore were seized from Khesara forest under Koida mines area, about 120 kms from here, they said.

Ganesh has been into illegal mining for the last several years and supplying iron ore to local sponge iron industries and crusher units hiring local villagers. A case has been filed against Ganesh at Koida police station in Bonai sub division, police said.

Ganesh was forwarded to a court at Bonai last evening which remanded him to judicial custody for two weeks.
