Odisha under strict surveillance, no need to panic, assures Minister amid nation-wide security alert

In light of the growing national security concerns, Odisha government has stepped up its vigilance across the state, even though no direct threat has been reported so far. As drone sightings increase across various parts of the country, strict surveillance measures have been implemented to monitor drone movements, especially in sensitive coastal and defense-related areas. Certain regions have been declared "No Flying Zones," and unauthorized drone usage has been strictly prohibited.

The Indian Navy has reportedly intensified patrolling operations along the eastern coastline, including Odisha’s long coastal stretch, as a preventive measure. While Dehradun and other northern areas have been under scrutiny recently, Odisha is also responding proactively to ensure public safety. A senior state official stated that these are precautionary measures to eliminate any potential risks and to maintain a sense of preparedness.

The state administration has issued directives cancelling the leaves of several high-ranking government officials, asking them to immediately report to duty. Other officials may also see their leaves revoked depending on how the situation evolves in the coming days. State emergency response units, police departments, and intelligence wings are all on high alert, informed Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, Suresh Pujari on Saturday.

Security Tightened At Key Installations 

Significant steps have been taken to bolster the security of major defence and strategic installations. The Chandipur missile testing range in Balasore, one of India’s premier missile launch sites, is under tight security cover. Similarly, the Hirakud Dam, a critical water resource infrastructure in western Odisha, is being closely guarded, with entry restrictions imposed in surrounding zones.

Central government establishments located within Odisha have also seen a sharp increase in security personnel and surveillance mechanisms. Authorities are particularly focused on safeguarding public places, transport hubs, and religious institutions. 

The world-renowned Jagannath Temple in Puri and the historic Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar are both now under round-the-clock security surveillance.

Arms and ammunition factories in regions like Bolangir and Koraput are also being monitored, with access control tightened and extra personnel deployed. These factories play a vital role in India’s defence manufacturing sector, and any potential threat could have serious implications.

Further, Odisha Police, in coordination with national intelligence agencies, have intensified scrutiny over individuals with previous records of involvement in extremist or terrorist activities. Their movements, communications, and local connections are being closely watched. Surveillance in railway stations, airports, and major bus terminals has also been increased.

A senior police official emphasized that the public should not panic but remain vigilant. “We want to assure citizens that there is no cause for alarm. The measures being taken are preventive and aimed at ensuring complete safety. We urge the public to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station immediately.”

The Odisha government has also begun conducting mock drills and emergency preparedness sessions in key locations to ensure the readiness of response teams in case of any untoward incident. Coordination between various departments—police, disaster response, medical services, and local administration—has been streamlined for rapid action if needed.

While Odisha currently remains peaceful, the state’s actions reflect a nationwide strategy to remain alert in the face of evolving threats. The government continues to maintain close coordination with central agencies and defence establishments to respond swiftly and effectively to any situation that may arise.
