Odisha youth 'sets ex-girlfriend's house on fire'

A youth identified as Jyoti Ranjan Das allegedly set his ex-girlfriend's house ablaze in Anandpur village of Bhadrak district after a breakup. Property worth Rs 15 lakh were destroyed in the blaze. Police are investigating into the allegations.

A young man allegedly set the house of his former girlfriend on fire in Bhadrak, following a breakup in their relationship. The incident took place at Anandpur village under Dhamnagar block of the district, on Wednesday.

Fortunately, no fatalities or injuries were reported in the fire mishap.

The accused has been identified as Jyoti Ranjan Das (28), a resident of Bidyadharpur village under Chudakuti panchayat. He has been absconding since the incident.

According to sources, the accused could not come to terms with his separation from the girl from Anandpur village. It has been alleged by the victim girl that Jyoti persistently pursued her, even threatening to harm her.

Jyoti was in a relationship with a girl from Gopal Sahi of Anandpur panchayat. He had been determinedly pressurising her to marry him and threatened to leak pictures of their private moments if she did not agree, the victim alleged.

The girl lodged a complaint with Dhamnagar police, stating that Jyoti had also issued death threats and tried to coerce her into meeting him multiple times.

The situation took a serious turn when Jyoti allegedly set her house on fire. “The inferno destroyed five sheds and reduced all valuables, including gold jewellery, furniture, rice, and important documents, to ashes,” she expressed.

Property worth Rs 15 lakh were destroyed in the blaze, she added.

It is claimed that Jyoti had warned he would burn her house if she refused to meet him. Ultimately, he acted on this threat, causing significant property damage.

“The accused is a threat to our safety. If not apprehended soon, he might commit further nuisances,” the victim girl said.

On being informed, Dhamnagar Police reached the spot and launched a probe.
